JAAKKO PERNU is a Finnish sculptor and environmental artist who works with natural material, often in an oversized scale, to create public site specific works around Europe and Canada.
He generally uses natural materials woven together, like willow branches and trunks he finds near a site. Once they are finished, the sculptures are left to the elements.
His works derive their inspiration from his early life in rural Eastern Finland, where Pernu helped his father construct wooden boats. The technique of manipulating wood is evident in his environmental sculptures.

“A heap of rough, trimmed tree trunks, nicely piled up, is in itself a signal of man’s presence and his wish to influence the surrounding nature – to mark it.”
